MasterChef turmoil in the UK: host John Torode drops out, accused of racism
After 20 years of successful broadcasting on the screens of the British public broadcaster, Masterchef UK has been embroiled in a new crisis at the BBC.
The longtime host and judge of the popular culinary show, Australian-British chef John Torode https://znaki.fm/persons/john-torode/, has been accused of “racist,” and the television network and private production firm have effectively announced that his contract will not be renewed.
Torode was accused by show workers of making discriminating remarks or jokes during recordings, as various tabloids reported today. The accusations have prompted an internal investigation, but the 59-year-old disputes them, claiming he cannot recall anything noteworthy.
This is comparable to the recent case of 60-year-old restaurant owner and show star Greg Wallace, who was suspended and eventually fired in the middle of the season after being accused of “inappropriate” sexual behavior, harassment, and bullying by competitors and coworkers.
The number of accusations has grown to more than fifty testimonies from victims or witnesses, despite his initial denials and later, very controversial attempts to justify his actions with an apparent autism diagnosis.
John Thorowood was dismissed from his position as host of MasterChef
After accusations that the 59-year-old celebrity chef had used a “very nasty racist word” were verified, he was fired.
“John Torood has been found guilty of using racial statements,” a BBC spokesperson said. This complaint, which concerns the use of a highly offensive racist slur in the workplace, was investigated and confirmed by an independent investigation conducted by the legal firm Lewis Silkin. John Thorowood disputes the charges. He says he doesn’t think the incident occurred and doesn’t recall it. Furthermore, he maintains that racist speech is completely unacceptable in any context. The BBC is taking this revelation extremely seriously. As previously mentioned, we will not tolerate any racist language, and we have informed Banijay UK, the creators of MasterChef, that they must take the necessary steps. John Thoroward’s MasterChef contract will not be renewed.
John had previously attested to the veracity of the accusations made against him. The TV celebrity, however, claimed on social media that he had no memory of uttering these purported remarks.
